UT Tyler Engineering Professor Receives TxDOT Research Grant

Dr. Wei "David" Fan, assistant professor in civil engineering at The University of Texas at Tyler, has received more than $132,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation to enhance their fleet management, Dr. Arlene Horne, vice president for research and federal relations, announced.

With the two-year research grant, Fan will help create a software system that tests the validity of equipment based upon that class of equipment's age, mileage, resale value and replacement costs.

"The resulting software will be user-friendly and designed so that it can be easily used by non-technical district personnel, to evaluate individual district units against a class, and by technical division personnel to develop optimal aggregate class code replacement cycles," said Fan.

UT Austin serves as a project collaborator.

A faculty member since 2006, Fan holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering with a specialization in transportation from UT Austin.

His memberships include American Society for Engineering Education, American Society for Civil Engineers and the Transportation Research Forum.

UT Tyler civil engineering students named him the university's 2006-07 "Best Civil Engineering Professor."
